i friends! A special welcome to our new list members from Desiree
Alliance, the Journeymen, and Writers in Drag! It's been a wild and crazy
couple of weeks. Here's the latest news:

The London Masturbate-a-Thon has been POSTPONED until August 5. We have
a location now, and at least one beneficiary organization: Marie Stopes
International. We'd still love to hear from any of your UK friends who
might wish to attend, especially if they'd like to help out!

Tonight the lovely folk at Queen of Heaven host their summer safer sex
party and have room for a few more RSVPs. Please see below, but note
that attendance this time is restricted to women and their partners and
gay/bi men; this allows them to maintain their gender balance.

We have already told you about Penny Slinger's fabulous events on 7/22
and 7/23. Please let us know in advance whether you will be attending
either her slideshow or her collage workshop, and thanks for
pre-registering. FYI, she will be in the gallery before her event on the 22nd; if
you'd like to meet her and view her magnificent collages, please drop
by after 5 pm.

Besides our great events, please see all the way below for Paul Reubens
Day (partially benefits CSC!), news on Cleo DuBois' upcoming
intensives, and a note from our intern Molly who wishes to interview anyone who
identifies/plays within the Furry community.

Another intern, Matt, is seeking out sex-positive (incl. pansexual and
sexual health) student organizations and activists (as well as
sex-positive instructors) at colleges and universities all over the US and
Canada. If you know of people or groups who should be in the database he is
compiling for CSC, please let us know!

Wednesday, July 19, 7 pm -- TRANSGENDERISM AND INTERSEXUALITY:
DIFFERENCES AND COMMONALITIES
At the Center for Sex & Culture, 398 11th St., SF. $5-30 sliding scale,
no one turned away for lack of funds.

What do the terms “transgender” and “intersexual” cover? Where do
issues converge and diverge between the two categories? Workshop attendees
will develop a better understanding of the different forms of
transgenderism and intersexuality, the vocabulary used in relationship to these
two categories, and the political and activist struggles of trans and
intersexed people. Within gender studies and in LGBT activist circles,
both transgenderism and intersexuality have become the cause celebre.
Despite this newfound interest, many people have little understanding or
misconstrued ideas about transgenderism and intersexuality, sometimes
confusing one for the other. The purpose of this workshop is to increase
understanding of the political needs of transpeople and intersexed
people, through deepening understanding of the two categories and the
institutional issues of both—where the commonalities lie and where they
diverge.

Participants will emerge with a better understanding of the categories
“transgender” and “intersex”, acquire relevant vocabulary, and develop
a better understanding of the political and legal issues that
transpeople and intersexed people face. Attendees will have a better
appreciation for where trans and intersex issues overlap and where they separate,
in order to become better allies.

Instructor Bio: John Otto is nearing completion of a Masters in Library
and Information Science at the University of Washington. He has a BA
from The Evergreen State College in multidisciplinary gender/sex
studies. He has also taken additional coursework on transgenderism at San
Francisco State University, interned with the Intersex Society of North
American, and is active within the trans community. This spring he
presented “Addressing the Information Needs of FTMs” at the first formal
world conference for professionals and anyone involved with GLBT archives,
libraries, museums and special collections, and collectors of GLBT
materials.

Friday, July 21, 8 pm -- THE WET SPOTS with KITTEN ON THE KEYS!
Smart, Sexy Canadian Duo The Wet Spots Harmonize at the Center for Sex
& Culture -- Local Songstress Kitten on the Keys to Open

CSC proudly welcomes "bawdy and brilliant" Canadian singer/songwriter
duo The Wet Spots next week for a rare Bay Area show. Cass King and John
Woods, AKA the Wet Spots, are a real-life couple whose musical comedy
features frisky lyrics, tight harmonies, and songs celebrating group
sex, anal experimentation, and a cowgirl who flouted Texas' law against
owning dildos. On tour to promote their newest album, "Hello Kinky," the
Spots will treat their CSC audience to a romp through the wild and
wiggy world of sex, where neither the prudes nor the pervs are safe from
knowing, loving satire. Perhaps best known for their Internet video
sensation "Do You Take It (In the Ass)," featured on The L Word and
downloaded over 800,000 times, the Wet Spots are equal parts sexual
sophistication, specialist humor act, and polished cabaret professionals.

Opening for the Wet Spots is San Francisco's own Suzanne Ramsey, AKA
Kitten on the Keys, whose burlesque-inflected cabaret shows feature
original songs as well as raunchy old standards, sung in an unforgettable
voice that will remind listeners in equal parts of Betty Boop and Mae
West. SF Weekly Music Award winner Kitten is a much-beloved crowd pleaser
and the only artist CSC could imagine booking on the same bill with the
Wet Spots!

When and where: CSC, 398 11th Street near Harrison, San Francisco. 8
pm, doors open at 7:30.
How much: $10-50 sliding scale. Tickets at the door. Bring extra to

Sunday, July 23, 1-5 pm -- SEXUAL IDENTITY COLLAGE WORKSHOP

Who am I? How do I see myself? How does society define me? What are
gender stereotypes? How can I express more of who I really am?

In this collage workshop, Penny Slinger will guide participants in a
journey of self discovery and self expression through the medium of
collage. Each participant will be asked to create a collage which defines
their sense of sexual identity. From her wide ranging experience in many
different forms of collage, Penny can reveal how collage can be used as
a powerful tool to re-create your own reality. At the completion of the
workshop, each member will be asked to share their collage with the
group, presenting it as their own map of consciousness and inviting the
insights and reflections of other participants.

Although Penny will supply collage materials from her collection,
people wishing to attend the workshop are requested to gather relevant
materials, photographs etc., for their personal collage and bring them to
the workshop. Workshop attendees should also bring their own scissors.

Penny Slinger is an artist, writer, photographer and videographer. She
has a number of books published, including three books of erotic
collages. To see more of her work, go to www.pennyslinger.com

Thursday, July 27, ALL ABOUT T! A workshop about testosterone BACK BY
POPULAR DEMAND!
At the Center for Sex & Culture, 398 11th St., SF. $10-30 sliding
scale, no one turned away for lack of funds.

All About T is a workshop that provides an overview of the practical
aspects of testosterone use for female-to-male (FTM) transsexuals. This
workshop covers what every FTM—and anyone considering FTM
transition—should know about testosterone, covering types of T, social
misconceptions of T, administration methods of testosterone administration,
permanent and non-permanent changes, physical risks, potential emotional and
sexual-outlook changes, and more. The workshop is also suitable for
allies, sex educators, and professionals who want a better understanding of
the hormonal aspects of FTM transition.

Workshop Background:
"Through a search for information to guide my own transition, it came
to my attention how astonishingly little information is readily
available about testosterone for FTM transitioning. Equally astonishing was how
little the majority of transitioned FTMs know about the use of
testosterone—the potential risks, treatment options, suggested medical
monitoring, etc. I also became aware of how many pre- or non-transitioned
people were grappling with whether or not to take testosterone—without the
benefit of full information about the risks and consequences of its
use, both from a medical perspective and for the implications for change
in their everyday lives. Adding to this situation, medical professionals
are often inadequately informed of the proper treatment methods for FTM
hormonal transition, and consequently, are frequently of little help.
Even for those health care providers who are relatively informed, they
are usually too short of time and too ill-equipped to prepare the
ir client for the physical and practical ramifications of
transitioning. This presentation is an attempt to remedy that lack of information
about testosterone use for transitioning. I have found that too much of
the academic work on transgenderism and transsexuality primarily focuses
on theory, which neglects and leaves invisible the day-to-day realities
of trans lives. As a result, an additional intention of this workshop
is to offer a glimpse into the practicalities of FTM transitioning, for
those who are not trans themselves, in the hopes that a deeper
understanding will allow allies to become even better allies. By giving this
workshop, I hope to build a bridge that begins to fill that gap of
understanding between theory and praxis." For more about John Otto see his
bio above (7/19).

Saturday, July 29 -- SMUTFEST!!
Produced by Jennifer Blowdryer and DragStrip. Jennifer Blowdryer
started producing and performing in Smut Fests in 1988 in Pre Giuliani NYC,
when swamp like lap dancing parlors littered the island like cigarette
burns on a hospital robe. Although she will never again get Tracy Love,
the 212-970-PEEE girl, to parade naked down a dimly lit runway,
especially as Tracy has now found the Lord and lives in Michigan somewhere,
Blowdryer's bringing it on home at the Center for Sex and Culture, and
hopes you’re still up for a good time. The first San Francisco Smut Fest
was in 1991 at the DNA Lounge followed by a smattering of others.
Vintage Smut Fest footage will be screened along with a blow by blow
commentary by Blowdryer. Featuring:

MC: Blowdryer & Fudgie Frottage
DJ: Alvin Orloff, author of Gutter Boys and I Married an Earthling.
Moonshine Shorey – This full figured bartender/poet from the Bowery
Poetry Club, not yet 26, spotted JT Leroy’s truck stop hustling stories as
a fake the minute he scanned them, because he will tell the story of
actually working in a truck stop in Vermont, in between living on a
commune becoming a Mr Lower East Side runner up.
Kirk Read – author of How I Learned to Snap, is also a peer counselor
and phlebotomist at St James Infirmary, a free clinic for people who’ve
worked in the sex industry at some point in their busy lives.
Burlesque by: Rose Pistola, The Indra, and other over the top beauties.
Malcolm Hamilton – a sexy singer in a sharp suit, formerly of the bands
SIR and the one man sensation Fauntleroy. He will blow your head.
Lady Monster – I (Jennifer Blowdryer) was first introduced to Lady
Monster at Sleaze Fest, by Mr Jello Biafra – sweet! She’ll either perform
some erotica (that word) or do a burlesque number, depending on
everybody’s mood.
Dave Dalton – The Perverted Pastor, fresh from Cell Block 5, will
accompany Miss Blowdryer, musically. They both date from the Mabuhay
Gardens, the old SF Punk Scene, and are remarkably alive.

When: Saturday, July 29th, Doors: 7:30pm, Show: 8:30pm
Where: Center for Sex and Culture, 398 – 11th Street – Upstairs!

Adult Sexuality Education: Principles and Practices
Thursday, August 31, 6:30-9:30, $25
When it comes to teaching workshops on sexuality topics for adults,
most educators have had to build their repertoires from personal
experience and observation. But there’s a huge field of adult education that you
can use to make your teaching more effective and fun for you and your
learners. Charlie Glickman will help you understand the essentials of
this far-reaching body of research and apply the core principles to your
topics and audiences. You’ll learn tips to help you create learning
objectives that shape your entire curriculum, skills to inspire and
support motivation in your learners, how to adapt your teaching to your
audience and ways to constructively use exercises to both reinforce and
assess learning. Whether you teach one-night sessions or semester-long
classes, this introductory workshop will give you a strong yet flexible
framework to build your lessons on, give you more confidence in your
teaching and free you to focus on what you enjoy talking about--sex!

Please email Charlie at workshops@charlieglickman.com to register. In
your email, please briefly describe your experience teaching workshops
on sexuality topics and two things you'd like to learn from this

Hi! My name is Molly Tamulevich and I am going to be a senior at Bryn
Mawr College. As a cultural anthropology major, I am required to write a
thesis based on original research and I want to do my project on the
furry community. I am an intern at the Center for Sex and Culture this
summer and have been a fan of furries since I first read about them in
high school. I would love it if you would be willing to meet with me for
an interview about your furry interests. This is a no-pressure,
non-judgmental talk. At this stage in my research, I am just trying to get a
more thorough understanding of the culture and its members so that I can
understand it in as multifaceted a manner as possible. If you are
interested in meeting with me, please give me a call or drop me an email at
(734) 239-2376 and mtamulev@gmail.com Thank you very much!
